John on Meet the Candidates

Cut Wasteful Spending to Increase Local Aid

John believes that in these tough financial times that the state budget needs to be managed by someone who is independent and understands the value of his constituent's hard earned tax dollars. John knows as the operator of two small businesses what its like to work within limited means and will fight to provide tax relief at both the state income tax and the local property tax.

It was unfortunate that despite promises for increased local aid by Deval Patrick and other Democrats both Scituate and Marshfield were left on their own by the state and were forced to override prop 2 ½. Yet with the continuing slump in the real estate market and the looming worries of an economic recession residents can't afford to keep paying more and more property taxes. Overrides are simply bad government and John Valianti will work hard to deliver more local aid to Scituate and Marshfield by level funding all state agencies and working to curb wasteful expenditure across the board at the state level. As an unaffiliated individual John owes no party, organization, or person any favors, and will fight hard to protect your tax dollars, and to provide property tax relief by pushing passionately for more local aid.

Affordable Housing that Serves Communities and not Developers

John believes 40B is unfair and benefits developers at the expense of our communities. John Valianti is completely in favor of repealing 40B to force the legislature to develop an affordable housing plan that helps the people who need it and protects communities from damaging developments.

By repealing 40B, John believes that the state in cooperation with cities and towns can implement a housing policy that is more friendly to the character of each individual community. John is a true believer in using methods such as inclusionary zoning to increase new affordable housing stock. John also believes the state's methodology for classifying and counting affordable housing needs to be reformed to include in law apartments rented for below market rates and two family homes. John is a firm supporter of encouraging more involvement in affordable housing conversion and construction by reputable non profits such as Habitat for Humanity.
